There are lots of options for where to stay in Newcastle, so keep reading or jump down to something more specific:

The steel city’s reinvention is real, and one of the reasons Newcastle has emerged as one of the coolest spots in NSW is its new collection of boutique hotels.

Just a few years ago, searching for somewhere to stay in Newcastle would have left you with slim pickings. But the city’s renaissance has transformed heritage buildings and industrial landmarks into some of the best accommodation in Newcastle.

So, as well as things like a luxury five-star hotel in a converted Brutalist tower, you’ll get quirky heritage pubs, self-contained apartments in a former brewery, and sleek waterfront properties.

The best Newcastle accommodation tends to reflect the city’s character โ€“ equal parts gritty and glam, with a respect for history mixed with modern sophistication.

Where to stay in Newcastle
Some Newcastle accommodation is on the beaches

If you’re trying to decide where to stay in Newcastle, the city centre and Honeysuckle area put you close to the action, with harbour views and easy access to the revitalised Hunter Street Mall.

But don’t discount the beaches, because there are also some great options near the famous surf breaks, if you’re here for the coastal lifestyle.

You’ll find decent mid-range hotels and apartments alongside the luxury options, and although they’re not expensive by Sydney standards, the prices can climb during peak times or when there’s a big event in town.

Perfect for a weekend trip or a stop on a road trip up the coast, I’d suggest planning for at least two nights to properly experience both the city’s culture and its stunning coastline.

I’ve got you covered for tips on the best things to do in Newcastle.

Now, rather than focus on particular areas like the city centre or the beach, I thought I would suggest some tips for my favourite places to stay in Newcastle – after all, it’s pretty easy to get anywhere in the city by car or public transport.

Best overall

To be honest, the three main boutique or luxury hotels in Newcastle are all excellent and are worth considering. They’re all relatively new and offer a great stay – with comfort and character.

I’ve chosen the QT Newcastle as my top tip for where to stay in Newcastle because I like the location and the style, but it’s almost on par with the Little National and the Crystalbrook Kingsley.

QT Newcastle

The first thing that strikes you about the QT Newcastle is the century-old former department store has been transformed into something completely unexpected.

Walking into the lobby, you’re greeted by an enormous 3D-printed moon suspended from the ceiling, for example. Throughout the hotel, charcoal floorboards and steel wardrobes reference the city’s mining heritage. But there are also colours drawn from the coastline.

That means dusty pinks like the dawn, sea foam green, and aquamarine tiles throughout the 104 rooms spread across nine floors. It all feels bright and fresh, with views across the water from some rooms.

And the location of the QT Newcastle is perfect for exploring the city, right on Hunter Street Mall, just walking distance from bars and cafes.

You might not need to leave the hotel that often, though. On the ground floor, the Jana restaurant has excellent meals like steaks and kingfish crudo, all overseen by a Michelin-starred chef who brings his Italian pedigree.

Plus there’s the Rooftop bar, styled like a Japanese izakaya with a huge whisky collection and 180-degree views of the city. (No surprise that it’s popular at sunset with visitors and locals!)

The QT is one of the most popular hotels in Newcastle, so I would recommend booking in advance once you know the dates for your stay.
