Rolling into Winton, you feel like you’ve reached the heart of Outback Queensland. The town feels small, but the sky seems big. And as you start to explore, you discover there’s so much to do here.
Because this small town is such a big stop on the Matilda Way, there is a surprisingly good variety of accommodation in Winton to choose from. You will find everything from iconic historic pubs and comfortable motels, right through to fully self-contained heritage cottages.
If you are looking for something a bit more unique, there are also some incredible luxury tents set on working cattle stations just outside of town.
Prices are generally quite reasonable for the motels and pubs, usually sitting in the mid-range bracket, while the outback luxury options will naturally cost you a bit more. It also gets more expensive when there’s a big event or festival taking place.
I would definitely recommend staying at least two nights to properly explore sights like the Australian Age of Dinosaurs and the Waltzing Matilda Centre – as well as just soak up the local pub atmosphere.

My suggestion for the best place to stay in Winton is a bit of an obvious choice – it’s the main star of the town, so you might as well be in the heart of the action.
North Gregory Hotel
For a truly authentic outback pub experience, you cannot go past the North Gregory Hotel, right in the main street of Winton.
The historic Art Deco building you see today was built in 1955, but the hotel has been iconic for much longer. Originally built in 1879, it’s said to be where Waltzing Matilda was publicly performed for the first time (in 1895).
One of my favourite things about staying here is the vibrant atmosphere in the outdoor beer garden, where a bush poet will often tell stories of Waltzing Matilda. You can grab a cold beer and a hearty pub meal while enjoying the live entertainment.
The rooms themselves feel a little dated and are not the most comfortable you will ever stay in. Still, they are spacious and offer a clean and quiet retreat in the evening.
With private bathrooms and reliable air conditioning, some rooms even open out onto a fantastic balcony overlooking the street.
The North Gregory Hotel is a highlight of any trip to Winton, offering great value for money and a healthy dose of country hospitality.
Be sure to book early if you’re coming during the busy winter period, because it can definitely fill up.
