Most people know Rockhampton as the ‘Beef Capital of Australia’, but this river city has evolved into much more than just a place to grab a steak.
For many visitors, it’ll be a stopover on the big drive from Brisbane to Cairns. Because of that, the accommodation scene has historically been dominated by motels… and there are lots of them lining the highway on the south side of town.
But as a major regional hub for Central Queensland, there’s also a solid range of places to choose from, and the best accommodation in Rockhampton covers different budgets and styles.
When you’re deciding where to stay in Rockhampton, the city centre makes the most sense for visitors. There’s been a bit of a transformation in recent years, particularly around the Riverside Precinct, so you’ll be able to see a few things while you’re here.
If you’re planning on staying more than a night or two, you might want to consider heading to the coast instead and finding some accommodation in Yeppoon. I think for people on holidays, there are more things to do in Yeppoon than in Rockhampton.
Having said that, the heritage of Rockhampton is beautiful, the art gallery is great, and there are some wonderful natural sights nearby.
You can read my tips for the best things to do in Rockhampton.
With accommodation, there’s generally good availability in Rockhampton unless there’s a special event on, and prices are reasonable compared to other coastal Queensland towns.
So with all that said, let’s look at some of the best places to stay in Rockhampton.
Best overall
For my best recommendation of where to stay in Rockhampton, I’ve chosen something that has a little bit of everything and will suit a broad range of travellers.
With a great location, modern amenities, and range of different sizes, the Empire Apartment Hotel will be really comfortable and give you the option to self-cater if that’s your preference.
Empire Apartment Hotel
If you are driving into town, you can’t miss the Empire Apartment Hotel. It’s the newest and tallest building on the riverfront, standing out clearly on the skyline.
Located right in the heart of the Riverside Precinct, the Empire Apartment Hotel puts you in one of the best spots in the city, walking distance to food, heritage sites, and the art gallery.
The property has been designed so that lots of rooms get views across the Fitzroy River or the mountains. But it’s the inside of the rooms that’s the real reason I’m recommending this property.
There’s something for everyone here – studio hotel rooms for shorter stays, but for anyone staying longer, the one, two, and three-bedroom apartments are fantastic.
They are fully self-contained with proper kitchens and laundry facilities, which makes a huge difference if you’ve been on the road for a while.

Downstairs, there are three on-site restaurants, including a coffee shop and a bar, so you don’t even need to leave the building to get a good meal.
There is also a tropical lap pool and a gym, plus secure underground parking (which is a big plus in the city centre).
It is more expensive than the highway motels, but for the location and the quality, it is absolutely worth it.
There are quite a few apartments so there’s generally good availability most of the time, but I would still recommend booking in advance because it’s a popular option.
Best motel
As a destination that’s often a stopover on road trips, there are a lot of motels in Rockhampton. There are no obvious standouts, but some are better than others.

The Stirling Motel

If you’re bringing the family here for a holiday, you’re more likely to spend your time in Yeppoon. But there are still some decent choices around Rockhampton if you’re not heading to the coast.
