Walk through Bendigo’s city centre and you’ll be surrounded by gorgeous gold rush-era buildings. Look a bit closer, and you’ll realise that many of them are also the best places to stay in Bendigo.
Maybe it’s because the city has such a strong arts focus, but there’s plenty of unique accommodation here, filled with character. Even outside the main streets of the centre, some of the best accommodation in Bendigo has a touch of history.
Of course, there’s more than that. There are also budget-friendly motels, several fun family-focused holiday parks, and serviced apartments catering for the business crowd.
Some other good options for the best places to stay in Bendigo can be found in the more suburban areas, in the charming houses and apartments that give you even more space and privacy.
I’d recommend planning to stay at least two nights in Bendigo – there’s more here than you might expect, and the dining scene alone is worth lingering for. Although many Bendigo hotels have breakfast options, there are some great cafes across the city.
Have a look at my tips for the best things to do in Bendigo.
So, with all that in mind, let me share some of my thoughts about the best places to stay in Bendigo.
Best overall
There are some really good accommodation choices in Bendigo at every price point, but I’m choosing something unique and authentic for my top choice.
The reason I think Hotel Ernest is the best place to stay in Bendigo is because of the way it’s taken a part of the city’s heritage and elevated it to a whole new level.
Hotel Ernest
Step into the grand lobby of Hotel Ernest and you’ll be standing in the old Commercial Banking Company of Sydney’s offices, Built around 1864 during the height of Bendigo’s gold rush, this is the city’s oldest surviving bank.
It’s been carefully renovated by David and Martin (the duo behind Ballarat’s Hotel Vera) to create ten individually designed suites. Each is filled with curated Australian artworks, contemporary furnishings, and soaring heritage ceilings with ornate cornices and ceiling roses.
The interiors are tastefully respectful of the heritage, yet there are modern conveniences like luxurious bedding, coffee machines, smart TVs, and even spa baths in some suites.
Downstairs you’ll find Terrae, a sophisticated restaurant serving modern European cuisine, with an underground bar in what used to be the bank’s stone cellar.

Another great thing about Hotel Ernest is the location. It’s right on View Street in the heart of the CBD. That means you’re just a few minutes’ walk from the Bendigo Art Gallery and other sights.
There’s also car parking available, which is convenient if you’re on a road trip in the region.
With just ten suites, Hotel Ernest fills up early during busy periods, so I would recommend booking in advance.
